Thirty-seven year old reality tv-star, Kim Kardashian West of Keeping Up With the Kardashians met with President Donald Trump in May to advocate for a pardon of a convicted felon. Alice Marie Johnson has spent over two decades in prison after being convicted for conspiracy to possess cocaine and attempted possession of cocaine. Last fall a news site by the name of “Mic” did a video feature on Johnson, Kim Kardashian-West saw this video and immediately became an advocate for a presidential pardon of Johnson. Kim is also advocating for two other convicted felons, Cyntoia Brown and Matthew Charles. Brown is currently serving life in prison for a murder when she was sixteen working as a prostitute. Charles previously spent over 21 years in a federal prison for selling drugs, was then released and now is being sent back for another ten because the initial release was an “error”. Last month Kim went to Washington to meet with President Trump about granting a pardon to Johnson. After Kim met with President Trump, a Presidential Pardon was given to Johnson and she was then released.
Kim recently told the news site, Mic, “If you think about a decision that you’ve made in your life, and you get life without the possibility of parole for your first time non-violent offense, there is just something so wrong with that”.
Alice Johnson getting released was just one of the victories of Kim Kardashian-West’s efforts to help many incarcerated people. Will her efforts to get pardons for other convicted felons succeed?
