The American Red Cross is offering an Amazon.com Gift Card along with a chance to win a scholarship to students that host a blood drive this summer. Through this program the organization will give away about $14,000 in scholarships. This is an excellent opportunity for students to help the community and gain valuable leadership and planning skills.
To be eligible to win a scholarship, student blood drive coordinators must meet the following requirements. They need to be a community-oriented high school or college student, they must hold a blood drive between June 1 and August 31, 2017 and they must collect at minimum 25 pints of blood over the course of the drive.
If students collect a greater number of pints of blood in their blood drive, they will be eligible to win a larger scholarship. If a student coordinated blood drive collects 25-59 pints of blood the student will be eligible for a $1,000 scholarship, if the drive collects 60-99 pints of blood the student will be eligible for a $1,500 scholarship and if the drive collects 100 or more pints of blood, the student will be eligible for a $2,500 scholarship. The value of the Amazon.com Gift Card also increases will the amount of blood a student’s blood drive collects.
Blood drives are important because hospitals have a constant need for blood in order to treat patients. Most surgical and medical procedures require blood transfusions. The only way hospitals can obtain blood is through donations. Each pint of blood donated saves a life. Thus helping to coordinate an entire drive is a rewarding and meaningful experience.
Students can sign up to host a blood drive by visiting redcrossblood.org/LeadersSaveLives or by calling 1-800-733-2767. Students should also go to room A209 to pick up applications and collect additional information.
