In the girls spring season of lacrosse, 2017 is the first year due to safety issues that the girls lacrosse team will be wearing helmets. Kendra Heath, a member of the girls lacrosse team said, “it helps protect us from concussions, so if someone whips the ball and hits you in the head, or if you run into someone head on you will be protected, so its mainly to prevent concussions and keep us safe. They decided to do this to keep us safe to make sure no one gets hurt, so every year from now on the team will be wearing helmets. I feel okay about the helmets because even though they give me kind of a headache, its worth it because I feel safe. It only affects the way I play a little bit because I am not used to it yet and sometimes its hard to see out of it but its not that bad.” As of now, Corning is the only district that is having the girls wear helmets, which will open up a door for safer games. Perhaps, other schools will follow suit so that girls lacrosse can be an overall safer sport.
