On Saturday, March 4, the Corning Hawks Indoor Track Team sent 23 athletes to the 2017 State Championships at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island. Jessica Lawson and Kevin Moshier both took home state titles in their respective events.
Lawson won the 1,500 meters run in a time of 4:25.66, edging past the field to earn her sixth overall state title of her high school running career. Moshier dominated the 1,600 meter run for the second year in a row with a 4:13.79.
The boys 3,200 meter relay team made up of Alex Spicer, Issac Cornfield, Carrington Vaughn and Jack Larson came in sixth place with a time of 3:29.95. Emma Mason came in eighth place in the 1,500 meter racewalk with a time of 7:18.34.
Indoor Track Coach Cartwright said, “This year we sent 23 athletes to states, which is the largest number of athletes we have ever had qualify in Indoor. We also had 11 medalists, which is largest number of athletes we have had medal. Lots of other athletes were able to acheive a personal best and end their season on a high note.”
Sophomore Cleo Baker, who competed in the 600 meter run and the 3200 meter relay said, ” My favorite part of the meet was the team bonding. When I was getting ready to race, I really felt like my teammates had my back”.
